Universal Credit Briefing

Universal Credit Briefing – 2 briefing sessions shall be delivered in one day.

Course description
Universal credit will start being rolled out as the main means-tested benefit from October 2013 and will fundamentally change the current system of benefits and tax credits for single parents.

The briefing will cover an overview of:

• The government’s objectives for universal credit.

• The benefits and tax credits which universal credit will replace and those which will remain.

• Who will be able to claim universal credit.

• How amounts will be worked out, including the cap on total household benefits.

• Help for childcare and housing costs.

• How the availability for work conditions affect single parents.

• Timescales and how to prepare for implementation.

• Where to signpost single parents to for further information and advice. 

Who would the training be appropriate for?
The course can be commissioned for FREE by voluntary and community sector staff who have single parents amongst their clients.  The commissioning organisation must agree to fill both the morning and afternoon sessions with a minimum of 16 people in each session with their own staff or voluntary partner staff.   

Single Parents and Tax Credits  

Single Parents and Tax Credits – 1 day course

Course description
Tax credits will be with us until 2017 so it’s still important to understand how they work. This full-day course aims to give anyone working with single parents a basic, sound knowledge of tax credits; you do not need to have prior knowledge to attend.

One day course designed to give participants an understanding of:

• The basic conditions of entitlements to child and working tax credit.

• How tax credits are made up.

• How the means test works.

• What changes need to be reported and when.

• How childcare costs are treated.

• The process for making final decisions on awards at the end of the tax year.

• Making a challenge to a decision on tax credits.

Who would the training be appropriate for?
The course can be commissioned for FREE by voluntary and community sector staff who have single parents amongst their clients.  The commissioning organisation must supply a venue and agree to fill the course with 16 people.
